Trax of Gold

This is a 6 day tour and will be a celebration of the pastoral and mining heritage of the South Canterbury and Otago Regions. Starting in the Canterbury town of Fairlie the new trip will take participants across the mountainous country stradling the boundary of Canterbury and Otago with overnights in Oamaru, Otematata, 2 nights in Ranfurly, Mosgiel & Alexandra.

Day 1 - Starting in the town of Fairlie the trip heads over the Hunter Hills into the Broad Hakataramea Valley. Big Country and Big Views.

Day 2 - We set off inland from Oamaru visiting a Historic but still operating Lime Quarry. Then up the Waitaki Valley to Kurow where we will spend the afternoon exploring station tracks with the station owner.

Day 3 - We head South West into the mountain ranges on the border of Canterbury and Otago and some really good 4x4 tracks taking us to 1500 metres.

Day 4 - We venture West from Ranfurly into the Mountain ranges of Central Otago following old miners tracks and visiting old gold mining sites.

Day 5 - The tour heads South into the Strath Taieri region to both historic and modern gold mining areas.

Day 6 - We follow the paths of the early miners except that those hardy souls mainly walked to get to the various goldfields of Central Otago.
